RECYCLE MY RUN

Since October 2016, we have offered a recycling service in all Runners Need stores. In that time, working with SOEX, we have collected over 2 tonnes of old running kit to be recycled or re-used. SOEX, assists people all over the UK to recycle their unwanted clothes and footwear reducing the impact of shoe waste, here and around the world. Recycling your old running shoes diverts important resources from landfill and allows them to be reused or recycled, creating employment opportunities and providing footwear to those who could not otherwise afford them.

Step 1.

We’re proud to be working with SOEX to give your old running shoes a new life and keep them out of landfill. When you bring your shoes to store to be recycled, we send them to SOEX who inspect them and sort them into categories based on the condition they’re in. The best-quality shoes are then sent around the world to be reused, while others are repackaged and sent to secondhand markets in 90 different countries.

Step 2.

The shoes that aren’t sent for re-use are broken down into raw materials: a process which begins by shredding them into tiny pieces. A variety of techniques are then used to separate out the different categories of raw materials.

Step 3.

The running shoes have now been separated into five categories of raw materials - rubber, leather, fluff, metal and foam – and can be recycled for a variety of new purposes.
