Fit Minimalist by design, the Nike Free 3.0 v3 features a seamless upper that's as flexible as it is breathable. Open mesh allowsair to flow, while bonded lightweight overlays help lock the foot in place without restricting natural movement. The inner sleeveadds a plush feel, and off-centre lacing reduces irritation that can be caused by chafing.

Flexibility This version of the Nike Free has wider flex grooves across the forefoot for muscle activation, providing naturalflexibility, ample protection and just enough support for serious comfort. On Nike's barefoot scale, the 3.0 most closely mimicsthe barefoot experience.

Origins After learning that Stanford athletes had been training barefoot on the university's golf course, three of Nike's mostinnovative and creative employees set out to develop a shoe that felt natural and weightless, just like bare feet. In 2002, theyexamined a group of men and women with pressure-measuring insoles taped to their feet, using high-speed cameras to capture imagesof each foot in motion.

The team spent eight years studying the biomechanics of shoeless running. The results yielded a profound understanding of thefoot's natural landing angle, pressure and toe position, allowing Nike designers to build an unconventional and flexible runningshoe from the inside out.

When superstar track and field coach Bill Bowerman met talented middle-distance runner Phil Knight, an unlikely partnership was formed.

Bowerman was looking for lighter, more durable running shoes for his Oregon University Runners, and Knight was searching for a way to make a living without having to give up athletics all together. The two put their heads together and came up with a shoe that featured outsoles modelled on a waffle iron – unconventional, but somehow it worked.

Bowerman and Knight named their new venture Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory, and began selling their shoes from out the boot of a car. From these humble beginnings, the company has grown into a sports industry market leader, and its distinctive ‘swoosh’ logo is arguably the most recognisable brand logo on the planet.

Despite this success, Nike’s mission statement remains the unchanged: To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world. Because if you have a body, you’re an athlete.
