At Runners Need, we believe there’s nothing like the freedom of a run and that to keep us running in the places we love, it’s up to all of us to do our bit to protect the planet. One of the ways we’re trying to do this is by supporting projects that actively protect outdoor places and help minimise both our own and our customer’s environmental impact. That’s why we’re working with City to Sea as a part of Refill - their award-winning behaviour-change campaign - that’s tackling the global issue of plastic pollution head on by helping people to live with less waste.
City to Sea is a not-for profit organisation which campaigns to stop plastic pollution at its source. They’re focused on combatting the most polluting single-use plastic items - things like drinks bottles/cups, caps, lids, food packaging etc - which make up almost half of all litter found in our rivers and on beaches. Initiatives like Refill do this by offering a simple, practical solution to prevent these plastics ending up as waste, or worse still, in the natural environment.
How does it work?
Refill is the world’s first dedicated app that aims to reduce plastic waste by connecting people to free drinking water on the go, by helping them find locations where they can refill their reusable water bottle for free. At Runners Need, we’re part of a network of over 40,000 businesses that app users can tap into, offering free water refill stations in all our stores as an alternative to buying single-use plastic drinks elsewhere.
So, when you’re next out pounding the pavements and need to quench your thirst, instead of buying a drink and adding to the plastic problem, drop by in-store and replenish your own reusable drinks bottle at one of our water fountains for free. Don’t own a reusable drinks bottle? No problem: we’ve got a range of quality bottles and hydration bladders from the very best brands like Ronhill, CamelBak, and Osprey - available in huge range of designs, colours, shapes and sizes - that will last you a lifetime.
The impact
To date, Refill has saved an estimated 100 million single-use plastic bottles from damaging the environment and has 285,000 refill stations located worldwide. But there’s more we can do. We’re part of over 400 local refill schemes based in the UK helping to raise awareness of the plastic problem, offering refill and reuse as a solution.
So, replenish your run with free drink refills on us, and together we can make a simple and lasting change that delivers a positive impact for the planet. Then tell your friends about it too, so they can also start to make those little changes that make a big difference in tackling plastic pollution and climate change.
