RECYCLE MY RUN
Since October 2016, we have offered a recycling service in all Runners Need stores. In that time, we have collected over 2 tonnes of old running kit to be reused or recycled. With our partner, The Pheonix Resource Centre, we continue to assist people all over the UK to recycle their unwanted clothes and footwear - reducing the impact of shoe waste here and around the world.
Recycling your old running shoes with us not only diverts important resources from landfills - but it also ensures your shoes are reused or recycled - creating employment opportunities and providing footwear to those who could not otherwise afford them.
HOW IT WORKS: RE-USE
Using our collection bins in store, you bring your shoes to us to recycle for free. Pheonix collects them from our warehouse to inspect them and sort them into categories based on their condition. From there, your donated shoes are dispatched to projects around the world to be reused or recycled. The best-quality shoes are reused, while others are reduced to raw material and recycled.
HOW IT WORKS: RECYCLE
When donated shoes are unusable, they are broken down into raw material and kept out of landfill. The process begins by shredding the shoes into tiny pieces, after which different techniques separate the raw materials into various categories. The categories are rubber, leather, fluff, metal, and foam – and these new raw materials are repurposed in various industries.
