At Runners Need we love to run. That’s why we’re proud to support Cancer Research UK in calling upon the public to pull on their trainers, wear pink and take part in Race for Life 2021 to help raise money for research into all 200 types of cancer. After a year where vital cancer  trials have been delayed, Race for Life is more important than ever, so we’re offering our customers 30% off the entry fee for any Race for Life event in 2021. To enter, just find an event near you at www.raceforlife.org and sign up before 31st January using code RNRFL21.

The Race for Life is Cancer Research UK’s biggest series of fundraising events. Taking place right across the UK, events include 5k and 10k routes for participants to walk, jog or run, as well as Pretty Muddy obstacle events for adults and kids. In addition, in 2021 a new 3k route is being introduced too for anyone wishing to take on a slightly shorter distance. The Race for Life is open to EVERYONE, welcoming participants whatever your fitness level, and offers a great way to champion the health benefits of getting active whilst at the same time raising money for a brilliant cause.

Why is getting more people, more active so important?

Keeping a healthy weight reduces the risk of many serious health conditions – including 13 different types of cancer. Getting more active is a great way to help maintain a healthy weight and to reduce stress, increase energy levels and reduce the risk of dementia and depression. The more active you are, the better – whether that’s walking, jogging, or online workout classes.

As Runners Need customers we know you know how beneficial an active lifestyle can be, so advocating and encouraging others to get more active plays an important role too. Just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 times a week – anything that gets you warm and a bit out of breath counts – can make a big difference.

Saying it is the easy part right? But how can people looking to get more active make changes that are easy to stick to every day? That’s the harder bit. Here are some top tips:

• Make small changes that build activity into your routine

Pick times in your week where you can add more activity. It could be walking or cycling all or part of the way to work or the shops, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or taking your lunch break or calls on the move. It’s more likely to become a habit if you’re doing it in the same place at the same time.

• Set a goal and track your progress

There’s evidence that monitoring how you’re getting on can help you keep up a change in the long term. There are a range of apps that can help you do this too – find what works best for you. Or why not make taking part in an organised event your goal?

• Buddy up with friends or family

Discover new ways to spend time getting active with the people around you, and you’ll find having others around is a great way to keep each other motivated.

What will Race for Life look like this year?

The health and safety of participants, staff and volunteers is the charity’s priority, so events may look a little different this year as additional safety measures will be introduced:

• Participants will be split into waves to reduce congestion

• There will be hand sanitation points across Race for Life events

• Social distancing will be introduced

Cancer Research UK will continue to monitor the situation in line with government guidelines. For more details on the how Cancer Research UK will be keeping you safe on race day please click here.

Your support is more important than ever

As a result of the pandemic, Cancer Research UK expects to lose £300 million, which has meant they have had to reduce the amount of research they fund annually. But cancer doesn’t stop. Every two minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. Your support, through events like the Race for Life, is what helps Cancer Research UK continue their ground-breaking  work to see more people surviving cancer.

Race for Life is an amazing feel-good experience where you can come together with friends and family to help beat cancer, so why not sign up for an event near you at www.raceforlife.org and join the conversation on twitter at @RaceforLife. Let’s run together.
