5 Tips For Safe Winter Running

At Runners Need we're here to help you stay motivated to get active and enjoy your time outside. Whether you prefer to run on road, trail or track, topping up on fresh air, sunlight and community spirit can be hugely rewarding during the winter months. To keep you in high spirits until spring rolls around, we’ve compiled a list of tips to chase off the chill, stay safe and keep you smashing your PBs all winter long.

Make sure you're visible

One of the easiest ways to stay safe when running is to stay seen – this is especially important with fewer daylight hours. For road runners, hi-vis clothing or accessories – such as a reflective jacket or running vest – is a great way to ensure that other road users can see you without you needing to carry any additional kit like a torch. However, if you’re out on the trails after dark, a head or armband torch is essential to keep you safe and help spot trip hazards like uneven ground or tree roots.

Layer up

Take control of the trails whatever the weather with the right kit. Rain, snow or ice don’t need to impact your running schedule – layer up in a technical top or running tights. Protect your head and hands from freezing conditions with thermal running hats and gloves. Prepare for upcoming weather changes by checking forecasts and making sure you’re ready for whatever might happen while you’re out on the trail. A good quality waterproof jacket with a hood makes all the difference when you're in the rain – keeping dry and protected will prevent you from getting wet and stops your core body temperature from dropping. At Runners Need we have all the kit you need to keep on top of your goals throughout winter.

Choose the right shoes

Unpredictable weather can present greater challenges underfoot. Make sure you’re prepared with the right shoes to maximise your productivity while running during winter. Choose shoes with good grip and cushioning to give you more stability and keep you from slipping in icy conditions. Waterproof shoes are also a great option to ensure that your feet remain warm and dry. Whatever your preferred terrain, we offer specialised advice on what shoe might best suit your needs. Visit us in-store to talk with one of our specialists and have your gait analysed to ensure you’re picking the right shoe for you.

Prep your pre-run routine

In the cooler winter temperatures, your muscles may take a little longer to warm up. Take your time to stretch and get your muscles moving before heading out the door, especially if you’ve been sitting at a desk all day. This small change can help prepare your body for your running routine and get the blood pumping to help warm you up faster too!
